416 stainless steel is an attractive, versatile martensitic grade with excellent machinability, and it finds its applications where requirements are for precision parts and components. The alloy is high-carbon, chromium-based which imparts its good corrosion resistance, though not as good as austenitic grades such as 304 or 316. To increase machinability, the alloy also contains sulfur and phosphorus, which adversely affect corrosion resistance relative to other martensitic grades.
